Architectural Cityscapes
Memory and Place
Biography
Born in Lorient, France, Yann Herry is a French-Colombian artist whose work explores architecture, memory, and place.
Trained first in visual arts and later in architecture, his practice sits at the intersection of artistic expression and the built environment.
After studying visual arts for seven years in Miami at New World School of the Arts, Yann went on to study architecture at the University of Florida.
He has worked professionally as an architect in both the United States and France, spending more than a decade immersed in the design and construction of cities. This background significantly influences his artistic work.
Yann’s paintings focus primarily on urban landscapes and buildings from places that have shaped his life, including France, Miami, and Colombia. Working with a mix of charcoal, water, and gesso, he creates stark black and white compositions that emphasize contrast, texture, and form. By stripping away color, his work highlights the structure and rhythm of architecture while leaving space for atmosphere and interpretation.
Each piece reflects a personal relationship with the city it represents. Rather than documenting buildings exactly as they appear, Yann transforms them into expressive compositions that capture the feeling of a place and, more importantly, the memory attached to it.
Today, he continues to live and work between cultures, drawing inspiration from the cities, coastlines, and architecture that have defined his journey. His work is part architectural study and part personal map of the places he has called home: Lorient, Montpellier, Miami, and Santa Marta.
